In her autobiographical work Fatima Mernissi tells of her happy childhood. She describes what it means to grow up in a harem: a life behind high walls, excluded from public life, without privacy. She compares the relatively free life in the harem of her grandmother in the countryside and introduces two different living environments of Muslim women in Morocco around 1945.
