At a fair on Plaça del Diamant, Colometa falls in love with Quimet. She plunges into a marriage, gives birth to two children and makes ends meet after her husband was recruited and killed in battle in the Civil War.

The novel "La Plaça del Diamant", published in 1962, made the Catalan author Mercè Rodoreda (1908-1983) world famous. Today, it is one of the classics of Catalan literature and has been translated into over 20 languages.
